Please don’t glorify Naxalism and Maoists

I am baffled after reading the recent article by Arundhati Roy in a news magazine on her trip to Chhattisgarh a stronghold of Maoists. I didn’t feel offended for the way she bashed out at the state, central governments and judiciary. I do agree with her point that the policies of the government actually led to the ever increasing reach of Naxalism. What is most baffling to me is that she has not devoted a single line in condemning the killings of policemen and civilians.
A massacre in which about 100 policemen were killed by the Maoists has full details of the events and planning of the massacre but she finds no wrongs in this heinous act of the Maoists. Jan adalats have been also praised and every move of the government, media, and judiciary has been lambasted. This is nothing but a complete glorification of the violence unleashed by the Maoists with innocent tribals merely being used as a shield.
There is no denying the fact that naxalism is mainly a government created monster on account of the continuous neglect of the particular region. Now that the Maoists have taken control and have free access of cash and guns they will continue to make this problem continue to linger. If the brutal force of State is to be condemned then we must also condemn the violence and mindless killings executed by the Maoists. Unfortunately in India all the so called intellectuals love to express views which can be by swimming against the tide. If she is so happy and with the things happening in Dantewada jungles it would be great if she can permanently shifts from Delhi to Dantewada jungles.

How about the many innocent people killed by the police and the state? Does the media ever investigate on whose behalf these killings happen? One does not agree with the killings of the Maoists, but on the other hand the state which is meant to be the voice of the people acts more in the interest of big business, which are mostly run by politicians or their kith and kin. Should we the common people agree to such blatant misuse of powers by our so-called 'representatives?' As long as vested interests in politics and business continue to repress the common people and their aspirations, there will be protests and agitations. When the people who are supposed to be our guardians (the police) take sides against common people there is bound to be anger. Is the media itself unbiased? They are run by big businessmen or by people who are hand-in-glove with the powers that be. In such circumstances who is to decide what is right and what is wrong?

Yes as mahesh said the "Terrorism is" an evil but not all revolutions attributable to terrorism. I fully agree that in a civilized society such a masscre is highly condemnable and it is meaningless to convert the social revolution into the killings. However, I suggest all my firends to first study and reasearch on the issue and findout the origin of such evil and then comment. Ms. Arundati Roy has not just commented, she is a great writer, studied many books, understood the society, visited somany places and after a comprehensive study she has commented. Therefore, even we also can condemn her saying only after studying the issue indepth.

Don't post rude or nasty comments. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. |
