Testing Times for UPA Government

AA

United Progressive Alliance won the general elections in 2009 with the Coalition leader Congress winning 206 seats, 61 seats more than the 2004 election tally. The reason for the better mandate from the people is there was no anti incumbency vote between 2004-2009. But it was not a cake walk for the UPA during its second tenure.

There were many contributing reasons for this

1. Increase in Fuel prices.

2. Increase in inflation

3. 2G, 3G Spectrum scams

4. Lokpal Bill

Increase in Fuel prices:

This has been a major set back of the UPA Government. With many states levying more than 30 percent of duties on fuel, still government choose to leave the burden on commoners\' shoulders every time the prices rise in International market. The government had in June last year freed petrol price from its control and had given the Oil companies a free hand in deciding the Petrol prices. There have been eight hikes in petrol price since the June 2010 decision.

Increase in inflation:

Increase in fuel prices, Government\'s inability to rise the minimum support price to farmers had an adverse effect on farming community across the country. Government\'s mispolicy lead to the increase in commodity prices in all sectors.

2G, 3G Spectrum scams:

UPA\'s second term rule had became a synonym for Scams. The involvement of UPA Ministers A. Raja and Dayanidhi Maran had fallen as a blemish on the prestige of UPA. The effect of which is clearly seen in the assembly elections of five states very recently.

Lokpal Bill:

The hunger strike of Social activist Anna Hazare had awaken country\'s men towards the concerns of black money and drafting of an anticorruption bill. Government\'s vague attitude towards this issue and ill treating of Baba Ramdev came under severe criticsm from the citizens of the country.

Besides this, various problems like Telangana are taking too much toll on UPA\'s prestige. Except for a weak opposition and lack of leadership in BJP, otherwise, the mid term polls would have been a certainity.
