Depression may cross coast on Sunday

A dry but windy Deepavali is forecast for coastal Andhra Pradesh as the depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal lay centred about 1,300 km from Vishakapatnam. The Cyclone Warning Centre said the depression would intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm Jal' and move west-northwestwards and cross the coast between Chennai and Ongole by Sunday evening or night.
There was no heavy rain on Thursday barring in Kavali which recorded one cm; while in Machilipatnam, the rainfall was less than 1 cm. The sea condition is also likely to be rough' to very rough' from Saturday.
The State government remained on tenterhooks for the second day on Thursday as the depression threatened to cause heavy' to very heavy' rain in most places in South Coastal Andhra from Saturday.
