After keeping the people and the State Government on a high alert for two days, the very severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, Jal', dissipated into a deep depression shortly before midnight on Sunday and approached the coast near Chennai for a landfall. It was likely to cross the coast in a short time.

The India Meteorological Department, which was closely monitoring Jal's movement, said heavy rains are likely in Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna and Chittoor districts besides strong gales with speeds up to 90 kmph along and off the coast.

The people and administration in these districts where massive evacuation was undertaken heaved a sigh of relief as the intensity of Jal came down. But, the high alert issued to collectors, the Navy and Disaster Management Response Force remained.
