Clearly on the backfoot following resentment among political parties against the GO issued on Monday outlining the policy for sanctioning new bars in urban areas, the Government sought to dispel the notion that the order was aimed at allowing the opening of new bars. Giving a clarification about the real intent and objectives of the GO, Panchayat Raj Minister Botsa Satyanarayana told mediapersons on Tuesday that the order only spelt out the policy to sanction new bars on the basis of a population slab derived from the 2001 census. But it was given a wrong interpretation by the opposition parties and people were misled to believe that the GO would facilitate opening of 2,000 more bars in towns and cities.
