Over 11,000 shifted to shelter homes in Nellore

Over 11,000 people were shifted to cyclone rehabilitation centres from the fishermen villages in Nellore district on Sunday. The evacuation was continuing even as gusty winds accompanied with heavy rain would continue for 48 hours more, said officials. The revenue, police and special officers were shifting the villagers from the coastal villages and other mandals. The police threw a security blanket along the coast to prevent the fishermen and others from venturing near the sea coast.
Heavy downpour began late in the evening as the cyclonic storm was expected to cross the east coast between Chennai and Nellore in the night.As many as 40 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force moved to vulnerable areas to respond to any distress calls from 11 coastal mandals, even as the special officers equipped with ham radio coordinated evacuation operations.
