Standing, harvested crop badly hit
* Vehicular traffic affected at several places as irrigation tanks overflow
* Ministers ask officials to expedite relief work
* Input subsidy to be given to farmers who lost the entire crop
The heavy rain that lashed Krishna and Guntur districts during the last couple of days damaged standing and harvested crop in thousands of acres and affected normal life. In Krishna district, paddy crop in nearly 45,000 hectares, black gram in about 3 lakh acres was damaged. Cotton, turmeric, tobacco and mango too suffered damage in thousand of acres.
Paddy, cotton and other food and commercial crops were inundated in thousands of acres in Krishna western delta, particularly in Tenali division.Vehicular traffic was badly affected at several places as irrigation tanks were swollen and rainwater flowed on the roads connecting Narasaraopet and other major towns.
About 70 per cent of the harvested paddy was still lying in the fields and it became highly vulnerable to the rain damage. The government had also ordered the establishment of 40 purchase centres to ensure that paddy was procured at minimum support price announced by the State government.
