AA

The winter session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the first one after Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy took over as Chief Minister, will be held from today till December 16. This was decided at the Business Advisory Committee of the state assembly held in the Assembly precincts which was chaired by Assembly Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar as the state government has not yet come out with the name of the new Speaker after Mr Reddy resigned following his nomination to Chief Minister's post.

The six-day winter session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature will begin from today. Despite a strong demand from the opposition parties to hold the session for at least 15 days, the government has said it was not possible to extend it beyond December 16. With farmers issues to be taken up on a priority basis for discussion, the contentious Telangana issue too is expected to be raised as the separatist Telangana Rashtra Samiti is making a re-entry into the Assembly after a gap of ten months.

On the opening day of the session, Question Hour will be suspended to facilitate the state government to make a statement on recent floods and crop loss in the state. It was also decided in the Business Advisory Committee meeting that the state government will make a statement during the course of the session on lifting of cases foisted against students in the wake of agitation for separate Telangana last year.

The state government is expected to make a statement in the House on the withdrawal of cases filed against Telangana agitators in December last year. This is for the first time in the Assembly''s history that the session is being held without a regular Speaker. The Speaker''s post fell vacant upon the elevation of N Kiran Kumar Reddy as state Chief Minister on November 25.

The House will take up discussion on the miseries of farmers in the state caused due to Jal cyclone in October-November and untimely rains this week that destroyed crops on several lakh hectares of land.

In view of many important issues to be discussed and the ongoing protests from various groups on various issues the city police has arranged for 26 platoons, 1500 policemen, 15 SP's, 23 inspectors, 72 sub-inspectors, 300 pc's who would keep a tight vigil outside the assembly premises top avoid any untoward incident.
