Guntur declaration' moots ryots welfare fund

The Telugu Desam, CPI, CPI(M) and other parties released Guntur declaration' at the Rythu Kosam' meeting on Thursday. It demanded compensation of Rs 10,000 an acre for paddy and groundnut and Rs 15,000 for cotton, turmeric and chilli crops damaged during the recent rains, power supply for nine hours to farmers, immediate implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations and recognising the destruction caused by unseasonal rains as a national calamity.
The meeting mooted the creation of a welfare fund for farmers. Party president N Chandrababu Naidu was the cynosure of all eyes. He was dressed in yellow shirt and a white dhoti and appeared a little bit weak making his first public appearance after ending his eight - day fast in Hyderabad. Police and party volunteers had a tough time in controlling the masses who jostled for space to catch a glimpse of the leaders.
