Leh flash floods death toll 165
There is no let-up in rescue efforts in this flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir town. On Monday, the death toll mounted to 165, and hundreds of people were still missing even as rescue teams inched towards the affected areas, wading through thick mud and slush. After night halt, the rescue teams comprising Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Jammu and Kashmir police personnel and local volunteers resumed their operations.
The progress in old Leh town is satisfactory, but the rescuers are facing difficulties in areas which remain cut off, following Friday's flash floods and landslips. At many places, the teams have succeeded in rescuing some people. Many bodies have also been recovered. Of the dead, 150 bodies have been identified, according to the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir's office.
