Concerned over death of nine persons and over 3,000 people taken ill due to gastro-enteritis in 13 districts in the last one month, the Rural Water Supply Department has decided to launch a special week-long drive to improve sanitation in panchayats. Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, who reviewed the rural water supply situation on Monday with Panchayat Raj and Rural Water Supply Ministers, will conduct a video-conference with district Collectors and level and Panchayat Raj officials on Wednesday and finalise the date of the special drive. Later speaking to reporters, Minister for Rural Water Supply Vishwarup said that Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers had already visited eight districts to assess the situation and formulate a plan of action. About 2,000 gram panchayats had been identified as part of total sanitation' campaign.
