Math Nobel eludes India for 74th time

The Fields Medal, thought to be an alternative to the Nobel Prize in mathematics, continued to elude India, the land of Ramanujan, Bhaskara and Aryabhatta for the 74th time. The medal is awarded every four years to mathematicians below 40 years of age during the International Congress of Mathematicians. During the ICM-2010, currently underway in Hyderabad, the list of winners of the Fields Medal was announced and none of the winners were from India or of Indian origin. Though three mathematicians of Indian origin were considered, they could not make it to the final list.The President, Ms Pratibha Patil, presented the Fields Medals to Elon Lindenstrauss of Hebrew University, Mr Ngo Bao Chau, of Universite Paris-Sud, Mr Stanislav Smirnov of Universite de Geneve and Mr Cedric Villani of Institute Poincare.
