Heavy rains paralyse life

Heavy rains lashed Kurnool and surrounding places in the last two days crippling life and causing damage to irrigation structures. Tungabhadra received a heavy flood and the KC canal bund was eroded in the city forcing the authorities to stop water supply. The bund was eroded to a distance of 26 meters at Swamireddy Nagar sending panic among residents living in nearby localities. The flow in the canal was around 2000 cusecs when the breach occurred. The irrigation officials swung into action and evacuated half a dozen families in the area and stopped the supply to the canal at Sunkesula barrage. The flood discharge at Mantralayam was recorded at 1.55 lakh cusecs on Tuesday evening. The flood situation is likely to be grim for the next few days until the present rainfall is drained out.
