Moving on to the political issues in the state. Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has said that Andhra Pradesh has earned the dubious distinction of being among the top States in the country in corruption. Lashing out at the State government at the inaugural of the party plenary on Wednesday, he said that people were being wooed with welfare schemes but the benefits were not reaching them.

He attributed the lack of commitment on the part of the government and inefficiency of the bureaucracy as the main reasons for the failure of welfare schemes. Referring to mid-day meal scheme, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that neither the menu was being adhered to nor was the quality being ensured. DWCRA women, who were taking loans and running the programme, were not being reimbursed their expenses by the government. When they staged a dharna seeking justice, they were beaten with lathis by the police, he recalled.
