Flood water discharged by operating four crest gates

Irrigation authorities led by Chief Engineer Abdul Basheer discharged flood from Srisailam reservoir on Wednesday night by operating four crest gates. Each gate was lifted to a height of 10 ft to discharge one lakh cusecs. The authorities took a decision following heavy inflows into the reservoir from Tungabhadra and Jurala projects. The flood ranged up to 4.08 lakh cusecs. In view of the tragedy last year, the officials decided to discharge flood and keep cushion in the reservoir even though the level was four feet short of the FRL.
The level rose to 881 ft by 10 p.m. when the gates were operated. According to officials, the flood showed signs of receding at Mantralayam which declined from 2.20 lakh to 1.76 lakh cusecs by evening. The Tungabhadra dam discharge was reduced to 13,000 cusecs with the flood under control in the upper reaches.
