Flood threat looms over Eluru
The city, surrounded by a cluster of low-lying colonies, reels under the threat of floods as the Tammileru is in spate since Sunday midnight. The Tammileru originates from Bethupalli in Khammam district and empties into the Kolleru near Eluru by passing through Nagireddygudem reservoir in Chintalapudi mandal. The sudden outflow of 21,000 cusecs of water from the Nagireddygudem reservoir on Sunday night, against its capacity of 30,000 cusecs, is ringing alarm bells for the city's residents. What is worrying the administration most is an announcement by the irrigation personnel for an additional release of 40,000 cusecs of water from the Bethupalli reservoir upstream the river in Khammam district by Monday night.
