Group-I exam to be held today

Last ditch efforts by Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and Higher Education Minister D. Sridhar Babu to impress upon Chief Minister K. Rosaiah to put off the APPSC Group I examination scheduled for Sunday failed as the government appeared firm on conducting the test.
With the government's backing, the Commission is all set to hold the preliminary exam at 445 centres across the State to recruit officers for 198 posts. Mr. Rosaiah reportedly gave a patient hearing and remarked that if the government succumbed to the pressure, more such demands would come.
Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan too is said to be determined that the exam should be conducted on schedule and reportedly conveyed this view to APPSC chairman Y. Venkatarami Reddy and a TRS delegation.
Tensions aggravated on the eve of the examination on Sunday when about 1.81 lakh candidates are expected to appear for it.
The Seemandhra JAC boycotted colleges in 14 universities while the Telangana students JAC and youth organisations have called for a bandh on Sunday. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has openly threatened the government with dire consequences if it went ahead with the examination. A handful of students kept police on tenterhooks when they threatened to jump from the top of the Arts College building in Osmania University if the examination was not postponed.
In this backdrop, Ms. Sabitha and Mr. Sridhar Babu met the Chief Minister while some other Ministers and Congress MPs from the region stepped up pressure on him. A delegation of TRS leaders called on the Governor urging him to ensure that the examination was put off to a later date.
