Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the communally sensitive regions of the State, for Vinayaka Chaturthi and Id-ul-Fitr on Saturday. Incidentally, Id-ul-Fitr celebrations in the coastal areas passed off peacefully on Friday. Two major Hindu and Muslim festivals being celebrated on the same day is rare, although in the past they have been celebrated on successive days. People were seen in large numbers in all the shopping areas and major malls in cities and towns on Friday making last-minute purchases.
