Twelve municipal corporations and 98 municipalities in the State came under the control of special officers on Wednesday following expiry of the term of their chairpersons.The government appointed these special officers from among district collectors/ joint collectors/ other officers of that rank for these civic bodies for a period of six months from now through two separate orders.

By this action, it has postponed the elections due to these civic bodies by six months. The decision to appoint special officers indeed was taken by the cabinet at its meeting on September 20.One reason cited by the government while postponing the elections is that re-division of wards in corporations and municipalities could not be undertaken due to ban imposed by union government on such exercises in view of the ongoing census works.

The 98 towns for whose municipalities have been appointed included Pulivendula, Mahaboobnagar, Kamareddy, Jagityal, Khammam and Adilabad.
