Mysore celebrates 400 yrs Dussera festival

Elephant procession marks Dussera end in Mysore
The famed 'Jamboo Savari ' which is nothing but an elephant procession of 10-day Dasara festivities got underway on the Vijayadashami on Sunday. Huge crowd with thousandas of visitors, witnessed the event in the cultural capital of Karnataka.
Amid pomp and pageantry, the majestic tusker Balarama, weighing around 4,900 kg has led the procession of 12 caparisoned elephants, horses, camels, police contingents and tableaux depicting various facets of Karnataka.
Balarama, who has been leading the procession for 12 successive years, carried the 750 kg golden idol of Hindu goddess Chamundeshwari and covered about four kilometres.
This is the 400th year of the grand Dasara festivities, started by Vijayanagara empire rulers in Mysore. Meanwhile, chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa offered prayers to the idol of Chamundeshwari marking the start of the procession.
